Want books? You got em.

Here you will find a list of known AusQueerYA with Queer Main Characters. Reviews and where to buy/borrow them coming soon.

Novels are arranged by the sexuality of the main characters (and in some cases gender identifiers of those main characters), and separated into Own Voices and Not Own Voices/Unconfirmed (i.e no public record exists). Own Voices refers to novels whose author and main character share a Queer identity. While we are supporters of diversity in all YA books, we prioritise Own Voices. For further information on this, check out this article.

We have not included novels where the main character is heterosexual, even if supporting characters are LGBTQ+. While it is great to see supporting characters of diverse sexual orientations/genders, if a novel’s main character is heterosexual, then we believe that that novel is not a Queer YA. For this reason, there is a distinct lack of Historical YA novels on our list, although readers may be aware of several with LGBTQ+ secondary characters. For a list of novels with secondary Queer characters/LGBTQ+ issues, check out Australian LGBTQ YA or Jenny Pausacker’s 2015 So Gay research project. For international reads check out the list on YA Pride.
